Description
Villa 1880 is full of surprises. On first entering the huge flat-roofed living room running alongside the pool – all sleek lines and achingly chic retro furniture – you’d assume this was architecture at its most contemporary. Yet at its heart is a plantation house dating back to 1880 – and gifting the villa its name. The perfect balance achieved between old and new is a tribute to the taste, passion and perfectionist vision of the creative powerhouse owners – an interior architect and vintage furniture supremo. As if it wasn’t challenging enough to dismantle and move the heritage ironwood building plank by plank from Kalimantan to Bali by land and sea, their design also specified massive three-metre concrete slabs for the ultra-modern showers involving a small army to place in position, and acres of terrazzo floor inlaid with geometric patterns in brass — a hand process that took six months to complete. Every detail of the villa is exquisitely designed to the highest standard, with rich textures and rare collector’s items such as retro Italian designer furniture, vintage Czech lamps, and antiqueleached silver plant pots. These curated with more modern touches, from digital mood lighting and Marshall portable speakers to a sophisticated water filtration system; yes, you can drink water direct from the tap — a luxury few Bali villas can deliver!
Villa 1880 is fantastic for a few families to share, as it can comfortable host eight adults and as many children within four bedrooms and a kids’ eight-bunk slumber room. You’ll find lots of open-plan spaces for quality family time — and with one bedroom on the ground floor, it will also suit multi-generation families; no need for elderly grandparents to tackle the stairs. Swim in the saltwater swimming pool, play ping pong on the covered ironwood deck, watch a movie in air-conditioned comfort, toast Bali’s spectacular sunsets on the roof terrace, convene for a scrumptious seafood barbecue or Balinese feast, sink into a petal-strewn bath — magical moments are plentiful in this designer’s haven. And if you can tear yourself away from the villa and its engaging, attentive staff, stroll to the beach in ten minutes, or pile into the VW for the short trip to Seminyak, or a day exploring the island further afield.
